J. Barnes (Cupcakes and Cops!)

Jessica Barnes
Beta/Gamma Community Director
USA Housing & Residence Life

This blog is a course excercise for EDM 510: Microcomputing. Class members must participate as "residents".

September 27, 2012: The Beta/Gamma Community experienced a great turnout with RA Ashley Doe's program "Cupcakes and Cops". Residents were given the opportunity to interact with USAPD Officers during a "meet and greet" on the Beta/Gamma Commons porch.

Officer Turpa and Sergeant McGuire converse with the residents about their
experiences with USAPD!
The USAPD Officers were able to speak to the residents about the services that their department provided in allowing for the campus community to feel safe and secure while residents pursue their studies and live in the housing communities. Residents were also given the opportunity to give feedback to assist the USAPD department in providing effective services for the campus community. RA Doe provided delicious cupcakes for the residents and officers courtesy of Dining Services! To discover more information about the USAPD, please visit http://www.southalabama.edu/police/.

Thank you Dining Services for providing the awesome cupcakes!
Residents! What feedback would you like to provide to the Officers of USAPD to assist them in making the housing community more safe and secure?

  1. As I have never lived on campus, I can't say much about what the police have offered in the way of protection on campus in the past. I imagine what most students want is to see a constant presence, patrolling campus on a regular basis.

You are very right about the USAPD establishing a constant presence and patrolling on a regular basis. The residents do see USAPD often, but they are usually stationary in their vehicles at only specific spots at specific times in the day and night. I do not know if you read USA's studnet run newspaper, The Vanguard, however, there is a police blotter that lists all activity that they have required their response. I understand that there are some areas of concern with trying to establish the methods you suggested because there is not enough manpower or other factors that may prevent them from being effective for not just the entire campus, but for the Housing Community because these students stay here and rely on their department for the maximum safety and security measures that USAPD provides.

  2. What a great program!! It is very important for students and campus staff to be aquainted in order for successful relationships to form. Well seeing that I live on campus right now, I think there are multiple ways police can be more visible and help the campus to become more safe.

    1. Preform driving rounds on the hour and half hour, not just sit in the car by buildings or in parkinglots where it is obvious no students are present.

    2. PREFORM ON FOOT PATROL!!! Sorry I raised my voice

    3. Sponser safety events on campus (example: self-defense, CPR)

    4. Walk within the residence halls

I think incorporating some of these events can definitely help change any campus to an awesome and safe environment for students!

I do agree with the points that you made in suggestions of USAPD being more effective for the Housing Communities at USA. I do endorse your recommendation of USAPD officers patrolling on foot (besides their plain-clothes officers if there are still any left) as well as walking with in and around the residence halls. USAPD should collaborate with Housing to figure out if cameras should be place a focal points around the Housing Communities in order to monitor activity occurring if they are unable to establish a consistant presence around campus. I believe that would curb most of the theft issues within the residence halls. Not only that, our department would be able to effectively place responsibility on individuals who decide to pull fire alarm stations or misuse fire extinguishers and etc. I must say that the Resident Advisors do their part in asking USAPD to collaborate to put on such programs, however, you are right in saying that USAPD should initiate more of their own sponsored programs. A first-aid program would be a great idea. I might even facilitate and ask them to assist them in getting residnets to get certified. Would you like to collaborate with me facilitate such a program?!

This was a great informative blog. Some ideas I have for USAPD to keep the housing area safe is more visibility. If students and visitors see and know that the area is under patrol less crime will be committed. I think also installing emergency phones along campus for students to use in case of an emergency; this would allow officers to know exactly where students are located. The USAPD does a great job but their is always room for improvement.
